Teaching and Learning about Race and Social Justice; Lesson and Resource Examples

The murder of George Floyd has shocked many into a renewed commitment to confront the reality of racial and social injustice in the past and actively work to eliminate their pervasive malignance in our society today. This slideshow provides a little insight into how Social Studies teachers work to make students more aware of the lives and experiences of others and give voice to communities that have been historically marginalized and silenced. No curriculum or plan of instruction in Social Studies is ever complete, teachers are always in the process of looking for the most effective resources and lessons, reinventing the courses they teach every year to find connections between current events, recent scholarship and student interest, needs and understanding. The continued public ignorance of the history of racism in our country uncovered by recent events energizes continuing efforts to broaden and deepen student understanding of racism and social injustice, nurturing their development into active, engaged and informed citizens committed to bringing positive change to our world.
